OK it's no surprise this month has an essential oils theme. We are really into natural health and wellness for ourselves, our family members, our friends, AND OUR ANIMALS.
Here in Northwestern Ontario, it's finally warm out - hallelujah! But that also means bug season is starting. If you live in a region that has bothersome insects, and you don't want to use harsh chemicals on your horses (or on anyone) - we have some really effective, natural, plant-based recipes.
These oils are not pesticides. They will not kill the insects (although some people do claim tea tree oil kills ticks). The goal is to avoid having the bugs bite at all - by repelling them away from you and your loved ones. Essential oils are MUCH safer than any pesticide, but please use caution around your animals by introducing essential oils to them SLOWLY and at LOW DOSES. Also, do not spray anything into their face - spray on your hands and rub on their face if bugs are a problem on the face. (For horses, fly masks are a great way to not have to spray anything in the area of their sensitive noses).
Best essential oils to use against specific insects:
Our 4oz spray bottles contain a total of 45 drops of Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils, witch hazel (as a binding agent for the oils), and water. This size is for people (including kids) & dogs - it's so much better for your health than using OFF or any other product with deet!
Our horse spray is in a much larger bottle - 500mL and 1L, diluted with witch hazel (as a binding agent for the oils) and apple cider vinegar. There are many other essential oils that also repel bugs, so feel free to contact us for additional ideas!
